Geisinger Medical Center

April 11, 2021
Finding a safer way to serve meals to employees, visitors and guests has been a challenge for many healthcare facilities during the pandemic. Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania was no exception. Accustomed to serving over 2,500 meals a day prior to COVID-19, the foodservice staff was tasked with taking a hard look at its Atrium Café configuration and developing a plan that reduced touchpoints and increased social distancing at the onset of the crisis. Working with Atlantic Culinary Environments and Starliper & Associates, the team quickly assessed the food shield products that were already installed and developed a solution that was a durable long-term answer to keep cafeteria employees distanced from customers. BSI created a tempered glass version of its plexiglass retrofit kit to extend the height of the standard food shields and included pass-through slots at strategic points to minimize contact. Understanding the urgency of the request, BSI, Atlantic Culinary and Starliper Associates all worked diligently to assure that meal service could quickly be brought back online in its new, distanced state. The custom retrofit kits were installed in August 2020, and Geisinger’s café has been able to safely resume its best-in-class operations for front-line staff, visitors and patients to the medical center.
